When Cal came to CrossFit Salus, we already knew she was a BA CrossFit athlete. But, her strong desire to improve skills and take her training the next level has been clear. We love watching her continue to make progress at the box and in the sport of Olympic Lifting. Thank you for inspiring us through all your hard work and dedication, Cal! We’re proud of your accomplishments and are honored to recognize you as our first Athlete Of the Month for 2019.

Cal Athlete of the Month1. Cal, when and why did you start CrossFit?

I started CrossFit approximately 3 years ago. I have been an athlete my entire life and I like to grow, have my body be shocked daily by something new and different so Crossfit was perfect for me!

I am never bored and I can always get better at something.

2. How has your performance changed since you started CrossFit?

My performance has grown leaps and bounds in many ways.

My strength, power, stamina, agility, coordination, mobility, and endurance have all increased! Not over night by any means, it has taken tons of work, but I love almost every minute of it!

3. Are there exercises you can do now that you couldn’t do before?

Omg…Yes…so many exercises!! I would need to write for hours!! Some huge examples to me would be throwing numerous reps of wall balls @ 20 pounds, when I could barely hit one @ 10 pounds before! Going from no Pull ups to tons into chest 2 bars into muscle ups with a tiny band! Plus hand stand push ups !!! What?? From none to multiple, double digits unbroken!

Ohh and my favorite, double unders, such an incredible moment when you Finally get ONE!!! Then Multiple Dubs , so very gratifying! How about lifts, oh my goodness, the work I have put in on all those…

I remember when I could barely get weight off the floor, now I can move very heavy weights for multiple reps in workouts! There are so many exciting CrossFit moments I will cherish forever!

4. How has your body physically changed since you started?

Well my body has been many types of fit throughout my life. CrossFit is a different look, than say my cross country running, Kung Fu, spin bike, or step class days…but it’s very similar to my bodybuilding, fitness competing, sprinting, and personal training days…I definitely have a ton of lean muscle, very little body fat, high metabolism, and am still extremely vascular at 45 plus years and 3 kids later!

My body is very important to me, so I am extremely grateful to CrossFit!

5. How has CrossFit changed you in other ways?Cal Athlete of the Month

CrossFit makes me SMILE!! It gives me passion to continue to grow, and conquer more of my goals in the box , and everywhere else as well.

It keeps me productive, focused, healthy, strong, and happy!

6. How do you describe CrossFit to your friends?

How don’t I is the question, lol…CrossFit is a huge part of my life, I love what I do, and I love sharing it even more!! I describe CrossFit and Olympic lifting like my family… They both make me extremely happy, grateful, proud, and honored to be apart of. There’s no hiding my Passion for the two sports!

7. What’s your “why”?

My why is…Grateful!!

I am so very grateful to be able to do what I do every day at my age!!

To be able to Compete in a Sport I Love , is huge for me!

I am continuously motivated by better…better Athletes, better Coaches, and being a better Me everyday…

8. Favorite lift or WOD?

My favorite lifts are Clean and Jerk and power Snatch!! I love Olympic lifts!!

Too many WODs to list!! I love everything about CrossFit WODs!! Never the same, being numero uno!!

The element of surprise daily, is my favorite part!!

9. What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit Salus?Cal Athlete of the Month

Always ask questions, no question is Ever a Stupid one!!

Never compare yourself to anyone else, it’s you against you!!

Keep a journal besides Wodify about all of your accomplishments, every little detail…you will be amazed at how far you come!!

Smile and Shine…BE YOU… most Importantly!!

10. What is your next goal to accomplish?

I haven’t actually tried to do a bar muscle up without a band !! I have put in a lot of progression work, and I need to just go for it !!

Plus The CrossFit Games of course!! I can’t wait to see how I do in my new division 45-49 this year!!

12. Favorite thing to do for fun?

CrossFit, Olympic lift, Compete in CrossFit…yep…

13. Favorite healthy dish….and favorite “splurge” meal?

Favorite healthy meal is my huge homemade salads!!

Favorite splurge is soft pretzels with hot melted cheese!! Ha …

14. If you could be a superhero who would you be and why?

Since Cassie made me Cat woman during the CrossFit games, I’m going to go with that…suits me well…plus I love dressing up as her for Halloween too!!

15. Favorite motivational quote?

In a world where you can be anyone, BE YOURSELF!! Be you…

16. Interesting fact not many people know about you.

Omg there are so many…ummm…I was shot in my left patella with a gun… at the age of 17 !!! In NYC on New Years Eve!!! Then was operated on by an Army doctor at Harlem Hospital in the Bronx!!
